Developer purchases former Hyatt Regency Grand Cayman

Dart Realty, a developer in Grand Cayman, has purchased the old Hyatt Regency Grand Cayman, the nine-hole Brittania Golf Course and Grand Cayman Beach Suites (formerly the Hyatt Regency Beach Suites) from Embassy Investments, the current owner of all three properties, according to reports online.

No plans regarding the future of the three properties have been announced.

The 53-unit Beach Suites on Seven Mile Beach will close Sept. 1, according to Embassy Investments.

Staff have been offered employment opportunities at the new Kimpton Seafire Resort & Spa, opening in November, which Dart Realty is developing.

The historic 230-room Hyatt Regency hotel has stood empty since Hurricane Ivan caused significant damage in 2004.

Insurance disputes thwarted repairs and Hyatt Hotels and Resorts pulled out in December 2007 when its 20-year management contract expired, handing responsibility of the property and the separate beachfront suites to the resort’s owners, Embassy Investments.

Over the years, plans surfaced regarding a conversion of the old hotel into a new resort and conference center, connected to the Beach Suites via a pedestrian bridge over West Bay Road. However, nothing ever came of the plans.
