A New Era for Little Cayman? Airport Construction Could Begin in 2026

The charming island of Little Cayman, known for its untouched beauty and laid-back atmosphere, may soon see a significant shift in accessibility and infrastructure. The Cayman Islands Government has taken a bold step forward by allocating $1.38 million to fund an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for a brand-new airport – a move that could dramatically transform the island’s future.

Why the Change?

Currently, flights to Little Cayman land at the Edward Bodden Airfield, a modest facility nestled near the coastline. But there’s a catch: it’s not licensed, doesn’t meet international aviation standards, and operates only under a special exemption issued by the Civil Aviation Authority. In other words, while functional, the existing airfield isn’t built for long-term sustainability or safety compliance.

If the EIA is approved, construction on a new, fully compliant airport could begin in 2026.

Balancing Progress with Preservation

As expected, the idea of a new airport has sparked mixed reactions. On one hand, it offers improved safety, enhanced travel experiences, and greater potential for year-round tourism. On the other, local residents and conservationists are concerned about overdevelopment and the risk of losing Little Cayman’s peaceful, small-island charm.

A local petition is already underway, aiming to preserve the existing airfield and protect the island’s unique environment. Many worry that a major infrastructure upgrade could pave the way (literally) for rapid commercialisation.

What’s Driving the Push?

Despite its size, Little Cayman’s appeal is growing steadily. Passenger numbers are expected to rise from 30,000 to 40,000 annually over the next 20 years, and a modern airport could support that growth responsibly – provided the right checks and balances are in place.

The EIA will be a crucial part of that process. It’s designed to assess how a new airport might affect the island’s delicate ecosystems, as well as its residents' way of life.
