The first ever open heart surgery has successfully taken place at Health City Cayman Islands (HCCI). Medical staff believe, as well as making history, the procedure will secure a bright future for the facility.

Elsa Robinson, 65, from Bodden Town was suffering from severe chest pains. She said her surgery will be a memorable one.

Ms. Robinson is the first patient to receive Coronary Artery Bypass Graft surgery (CABG), a procedure that improves blood-flow to the heart by rerouting blood around a blocked or narrowed portion of a coronary artery.

“I’m very confident in the doctors and they should be confident as well. I feel good about it. I would have to go with family abroad and sometimes it’s too much money and it can be hard on some people. I’ve very blessed the surgery could be done here,” Ms. Robinson added.

Dr. Binoy and his team of specialists carried out the surgery.

“Almost everyday she would get pain and wasn’t able to do normal activities. She had four blocks in her arteries that supplied blood to the heart. A bypass operation was the best thing for her,” he said.

“The success of this will build confidence in us and the Cayman population, as now they know this can be done here and not overseas, ” he added.

Dr. Binoy and his team have previously performed more than 2,500 coronary artery bypass graft surgeries in India.
