We Put Cayman’s Reviews to the Test: What Do We Really Think?

We Put Cayman’s Reviews to the Test: What Do We Really Think?

If you're planning a trip to the Cayman Islands, chances are you'll spend some time reading reviews before deciding where to go. But how do those reviews compare with the experiences of people who have visited the islands time and time again?

In this episode of The Cayman Blueprint Podcast, Ellie and Anwar from Oasis Land Development did something a little different. They picked out TripAdvisor and Google reviews covering attractions, beaches, restaurants and local favourites across Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, then compared them with their own experiences.

Having travelled extensively across all three islands, the Oasis team has visited many of these locations personally. Some reviews were spot on. Others sparked a little debate. And despite supposedly using a five-point scoring system, it didn't take Anwar long to start handing out sixes, sevens and even a ten.

What We Put To The Test

  • Rum Point, Grand Cayman
  • Stingray City
  • Point of Sand, Little Cayman
  • Pioneer Bakery, Cayman Brac
  • Barracudas Bar & Grill
  • Seven Mile Beach
  • Cayman Turtle Centre
  • Kingston Bight Beach Bar
  • Sunset Place, Cayman Brac

Rum Point, Grand Cayman

First up was Rum Point, with TripAdvisor reviews praising its cocktails, service, relaxed setting and recent improvements, while also pointing out that it isn't the cheapest place to spend the day.

Having visited Rum Point themselves, Ellie and Anwar largely agreed. The food and cocktails received particularly high praise, including the famous Mudslide, which Anwar confirmed he'd sampled more than once.

They also highlighted how much Rum Point has changed following its major refurbishment. Restaurants, shops, changing rooms, showers, hammocks and other facilities now make it an easy place to spend several hours or even most of the day.

One reviewer felt the main beach wasn't ideal for snorkelling, which the team could understand. The water immediately in front of Rum Point is very shallow and protected, making it particularly suitable for families and children.

For snorkelling, however, you don't have to go far. Head beyond the main swimming area towards the pier and there are deeper areas where fish and other marine life can be spotted.

Oasis Rating: 5/5

Is Stingray City Really A Grand Cayman Must-Do?

Next came one of Grand Cayman's most famous attractions: Stingray City.

One TripAdvisor review described it as a Grand Cayman "must do", while another visitor was surprised that the water wasn't as shallow and calm as they'd expected.

The important thing to remember is that Stingray City is out at sea on a natural sandbar, so conditions depend on the weather. On some visits the water can be exceptionally calm; on others, there can be more movement.

The stingrays aren't domesticated either. They're wild animals that have visited the sandbar for generations and have become accustomed to boats arriving and being fed.

"Was I happy I did it the first time? Yes."

— Ellie

Ellie admitted she still finds getting into the water with the stingrays slightly intimidating, despite having visited several times. Anwar, on the other hand, had no such reservations and described it as somewhere everyone should experience at least once.

Point Of Sand: Little Cayman At Its Best

The reviews became particularly glowing when the podcast reached Point of Sand on Little Cayman.

One visitor described the combination of white sand, clear turquoise water and uninterrupted views as something you have to see to believe. Anwar needed very little convincing.

Point of Sand has long been one of his favourite places in the Cayman Islands. Part of its appeal is its simplicity. There aren't restaurants, beach bars or rows of sun loungers. Instead, you get a beautiful stretch of beach, the Caribbean Sea and, quite often, very few other people around.

There's also a small cabana where visitors have traditionally left their names — and several members of the Oasis team have already added theirs.

Ellie's Rating: 4/5   |   Anwar's Rating: 6/5

Yes, six out of five. His explanation was simple: "Little Cayman is paradise."

Pioneer Bakery: A Cayman Brac Institution

From beaches to baked goods, the next stop was Pioneer Bakery on Cayman Brac.

The Google reviews praised its fresh bread, coconut rolls, cinnamon rolls and other baked goods, while also offering one useful piece of advice: if you see something you want, buy it. Popular items can sell quickly.

Anwar could confirm that from experience. He'd bought plenty on previous visits — although apparently some of it didn't even make it into a bag before being eaten.

The bakery is also a favourite of Oasis Director John McClean Jr., who has been known to request bread from Pioneer Bakery whenever the team visits Cayman Brac.

Ellie hadn't actually eaten anything from the bakery yet, which led to some debate over whether she was technically allowed to give it a rating. That particular argument remains unresolved.

Barracudas: Good Food, Games And A Relaxed Brac Atmosphere

Another Cayman Brac favourite was Barracudas Bar & Grill.

The TripAdvisor reviews praised the friendly service, cocktails, pizzas, tacos and relaxed atmosphere — something that closely matched the team's own experiences.

On their most recent visit, the Oasis team spent an entire evening there eating pizza, chatting, playing shuffleboard and attempting the various games and puzzles around the bar.

It's exactly the sort of laid-back place where you can arrive for food and find yourself staying for the evening.

Ellie's Rating: 5/5   |   Anwar's Rating: 7/5

Seven Mile Beach: Famous For A Reason

Could you really discuss Cayman reviews without mentioning Seven Mile Beach?

One TripAdvisor reviewer gave it three stars, describing it as beautiful but commercial in parts. The team actually agreed with some of that assessment.

Seven Mile Beach isn't one uniform experience. Walk along it and you'll pass busy resorts, quieter apartment developments, individual homes and stretches where there's relatively little happening at all. That's also part of its appeal.

You can spend the day at a beachside restaurant or resort, or simply bring your own towel, food and drinks and find a quieter spot. Locals regularly do exactly that, particularly at weekends.

The team also highlighted the sunsets, clear water and the simple pleasure of walking along the shoreline.

Their biggest recommendation was simple: don't make Seven Mile Beach the only part of Grand Cayman you see. It's famous for good reason, but head east towards Rum Point, explore the quieter districts and experience more of the island while you're there.

For those looking beyond a holiday and considering freehold land opportunities across the Cayman Islands, exploring the different districts in person is also a useful way to understand just how much the atmosphere and character can vary from one part of Cayman to another.

Oasis Rating: 5/5

A Day At The Cayman Turtle Centre

The Cayman Turtle Centre received positive TripAdvisor reviews for being both entertaining and educational.

Visitors highlighted snorkelling with turtles, seeing nurse sharks, learning about marine life and spending time around the pool and water slide.

Ellie had visited previously and particularly remembered how much there was to learn. Rather than simply being somewhere to see turtles, the experience includes information about conservation, rehabilitation and Cayman's marine life.

It's also somewhere you can make a full day of, particularly for families.

Ellie's Rating: 4/5   |   Anwar's Rating: 5/5

The One-Star Review Anwar Definitely Didn't Agree With

Then came perhaps the biggest disagreement of the episode.

A one-star Google review of Kingston Bight Beach Bar on Little Cayman criticised the customer service. Anwar's recent experience couldn't have been more different.

During one visit, the team were allowed to use kayaks without charge. When they returned and decided to order burgers, the bar had run out of bread.

Rather than simply saying they couldn't make them, a member of staff drove to the supermarket, bought bread, came back and made the burgers — with a complimentary beer thrown in too.

"Now that's what you call service."

— Anwar

The team had originally planned to stop for around half an hour. They ended up staying for three or four.

With views towards Owen Island, a relaxed atmosphere and what Anwar described as exceptional food and service, his verdict couldn't have been further from the one-star review.

Anwar's Rating: 10/5   |   Phoenix's Rating: 5/5

Sunset Place, Cayman Brac

The final stop took the conversation back to Cayman Brac and Sunset Place.

As the Google reviews suggest, this is somewhere to stop, slow down and enjoy the scenery. With picnic tables, views towards Little Cayman and a beautiful outlook as the sun goes down, it doesn't need attractions or facilities to make it worth visiting.

You might stop for 15 or 20 minutes, or bring food and spend much longer there. Ellie's suggestion for the perfect combination? Stop at Pioneer Bakery first, pick up some food and then head to Sunset Place for a picnic.

Ellie's Rating: 5/5

Reviews Are Useful — But Experience Cayman For Yourself

Behind all the fun, there was an important point to the episode. Online reviews can be extremely useful when planning a trip, particularly when you've never visited a destination before. But they're also personal. One visitor's five-star experience can easily be another person's three-star day.

Ellie and Anwar weren't trying to prove any of the reviewers wrong. Instead, they wanted to add their own first-hand experiences after years of travelling between all three Cayman Islands.

And perhaps that's the best way to approach the Cayman Islands. Read the reviews, do your research and make a list of the places you'd like to see — then go and experience them for yourself.
