Cayman Brac received a rare but welcome visitor this week as the luxury cruise vessel Explora I made a stop at the island, bringing with it hundreds of guests and a wave of energy for the local community. Unlike Grand Cayman, which sees frequent cruise ship activity, Cayman Brac typically welcomes just one cruise ship per year — making this occasion a special one for residents and visitors alike.
The ship, operated by MSC Cruises, anchored off the island’s northwest coast, and passengers were brought ashore via lifeboats to Scott’s Dock. By midday, more than 450 of the 657 passengers had already disembarked to explore the island, meet local artisans, and experience the quiet charm of the Brac.
Port Manager Myra Ryan-Ebanks noted that the day was running smoothly and spirits were high. “Tendering operations have been seamless, and the passengers are enjoying themselves. The whole community feels uplifted by the ship’s arrival.”
The welcome extended far beyond logistics. District Commissioner Mark Tibbetts shared that 15 vendor stalls were set up near the dock, showcasing local crafts and souvenirs. A live band added to the festive atmosphere, while schoolchildren greeted guests with warm smiles. Some visitors took the opportunity to explore the island more deeply by joining guided tours or renting cars, while others chose a relaxed afternoon walking the coastline, visiting beaches, and sampling Brac’s local cuisine.
The Premier, Hon. Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, also visited Scott’s Dock during the event and expressed her appreciation for the island’s well-organised welcome and community spirit.

This visit marked a significant moment, especially after a previously scheduled stop by Explora II — a sister ship — was cancelled in February due to rough sea conditions that made tendering operations unsafe. Fortunately, the weather held up this time, allowing passengers to safely experience what makes Cayman Brac so unique.
